Historical Fun Facts
Canvas has been the go-to medium used by artists for many centuries, and the word "canvas" traces its origins back to the 13th century. It's derived from the Anglo-French expression "canevaz", which also comes from the Vulgar Latin "cannapaceus", meaning "made of hemp". Canvases replaced wooden panels as a platform for oil painting. One of the oldest conserved oil canvas paintings today is the French "Madonna With Angels", displayed currently in a museum in Berlin, dating back to 1410. A more popular work in this material, Saint George and the Dragon (displayed on the image above) by Paolo Uccello, goes back to 1470 During that day and age, canvas was commonly used by painters and other artists. Today the material can also be seen on fashion items like purses, handbags, backpacks, shoes and even phone cases, as it provides a kraft and vintage look.
How to Frame a Rolled Canvas
Here are some DIY tips on how to frame your canvas on your own. Each canvas will come with some extra material on each side, so that you can stretch it without losing vital pieces of your art. You'll also need some stretcher bars for your canvas. Place your frame on the backside of your print and wrap the edges around the sides firmly and carefully. Use a stapler to keep them in place.
Once you've secured each side with at least one staple, flip the frame over and take a look at how the centering and stretching is looking before adding more staples. If you're not satisfied, just remove the staples and accommodate until the picture is set both tightly stretched and perfectly centered. Flip the frame again and secure the position with more staples. Remember to leave some room between the staples to prevent the canvas from tearing. If you're not confident that you can achieve this yourself, we recommend seeking a professional framer to prevent damage to your work.
